PORTUGUESE COACH TIPS CHRISTIANO RONALDO FOR FIFA BALLON D'OR.

Following his impressive and professional display in this years Euro 2012 competition, Portuguese coach Paulo Bento has suggested his team captain Chistiano Ronaldo should be the favourite to win the FIFA Ballon D'Or this year despite Portugal's inability to go beyond the semi finals of the competition. Ronaldo's 46 goals this season helped Real Madrid reclaim the Spanish title from arch rivals FC Barcelona last season and his blistering form showed in the Euro 2012 competition as his three goals helped Portugal to the semi finals only to lose out on penalties to current holders Spain.

According to Bento, 'Ronaldo's ahuman being who has spent the last 11 months under intense presssure. He's one of the nest in the world and I think this year he will be considered the best in the world'. He added: “He was a perfect captain. He has an extremely high level of professionalism and shows it at all times.” However, a strong case has to be made for FC Barcelona's goal machine. Lionel Messi whose total haul of 73 goals in one season couldn't secure the Spanish la Liga title for the Azulgrana's but managed to win the Copa Del Rey (Equivalent of the FA Cup) for the Catalan club.

Real Madrid star Ronaldo claimed the Ballon d’Or and FIFA World Player of the Year in 2008, but Barcelona rival Lionel Messi took both awards the following year and then claimed the new hybrid FIFA Ballon d’Or in 2010 and 2011. This year again both players have presented strong claims to the title with Lionel Messi recently leading his Argentine team to a 4-3 victory in a friendly in New Jersey and also scoring a sublime hat trick on the strength of his rich scoring form this season.

It will be interesting to know who will win this year's crown especially if both players continue at this rate at the beginning of next season but, we let's not be quick to forget Juventus talisman, Andrea Pirlo. I do feel that between Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, the Azzuri's Andrea Pirlo might just nick the title if the Italians go on to win the Euro competition tomorrow.
