LIONEL MESSI WINS 2012 ESPY AWARD AHEAD OF CHRISTIANO RONALDO, SAYS "...FABREGAS AND OTHERS TAUGHT I WAS DUMB."

With 73 goals in 60 appearances for FC Barcelona in the 2011/2012 season, Argentine soccerstar Lionel Messi has been voted the Best International Athlete at the 2012 ESPY awards held on Thursday July 12th in Los Angeles.

The award which was started by ESPN in 1993 was given to the diminutive Argentine for his outstanding performance last season where he retained the UEFA champions league golden boot for the fourth consecutive season as well as grabbing the Spanish La-Liga Pichichi award with 50 goals amongst his numerous assists for the club. The 25 yr old was selected for the prize ahead of a host of world's biggest sporting stars like Serbian tennis player Novak Djokovic, LPGA Championship winner Yani Tseng, as well as his Real Madrid rival Cristiano Ronaldo. He now ranks amongst the likes of Roger Federer, Maria Sharapova and Usain Bolt: Sports personalities who have won the award previously.

In another development, Lionel Messi told Hungarian magazine Kepes Sport  that his team-mates in Barcelona's La Masia youth accademy thought he was dumb. "Cesc Fabregas told me that when I was little, I dressed in silence and they thought I was dumb." "Now I am more open, and not so shy in the locker room as it was before in La Masia."

With the rate at which he is smashing all existing soccer records, let's just keep our fingers crossed as to what magic the Argentine's got to show the world when the season resumes in August. Messi will start pre-season training with the Blaugrana on Monday, ahead of the first friendly against Hamburg on July 24. Now, that's a match you might want to use to wet your apetite.
