INJURY FORCES TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR'S LEDLEY KING INTO EARLY RETIREMENT.
With more than 300 games for Tottenham after his 1999 debut and a little more than 21 caps for the English Three Lions from 2002-2004, Spurs Skipper Ledley King has called it quits with professional football due to his nagging knee injury problems. With his retirement, he now joins an elite list of a few select players who only played for one football club throughout their playing career.
The 31 yr old King who led the Spurs side to a Carling cup final victory against Chelsea in 2008 and also a Champions League qualification in the 2009-10 season had this to say on the Spurs official website, "I have been here since I was a boy. I have always considered it my club and have always found it hard to imagine wearing the shirt of another team.
"I know that being a one-club man is a rarity these days, but I have always enjoyed being part of the set-up here. I would like to say thank you to everyone at the club, and to the fans.
"I have missed a lot of football over the years, but the Spurs fans have always been patient and incredibly supportive with me during difficult periods. Sadly, my injuries and inability to train have now finally brought an end to my career."
In appreciation of his 17 years loyalty to the club, he has been given an ambassadorial role where he will be operating behind the scene for both club and community. Club Chairman, david Levy extolled the players virtues when he expressed this statement on the club's website. Said he: "Ledley has made a magnificent contribution to this club as a wonderful player, captain and ambassador.
"It has been well documented how he has battled against injury over the years, and it is testament to the character of the man how he managed to sustain such high standards of performance on the pitch while providing such fine leadership.
"It is in an ambassadorial capacity that Ledley will continue, playing a crucial role in supporting the club's work in the community and the ongoing regeneration of the Tottenham area, whilst also being a hugely positive role model for our younger players."
Once again, we are presented with a model player both on and off the pitch as expressed by the people he served for the most part of his playing career. Here's wishing him all the very best in his ambassadorial position.
