CHILE BANS SIX OF IT'S NATIONAL TEAM PLAYERS FOR INDISCIPLINE, 11TH JULY 2007: THIS DAY IN SOCCER.

Following what the Chilean Football Federation termed "Internal Indiscipline" in their squad to the 2007 Copa America competition, the federation on the 11th of July that same year banned six of it's National team players for 20 matches each with a statement that they would never ever be captains of the Chilean National Team, "The La Rojas" as they are called.

Interestingly, the list of banned players at the time included team captain Jorge Valdivia and striker Reinaldo Navia. Others were defenders Alvaro Ormeno, Rodrigo Tello, Jorge Vargas and Pablo Contreras. The announcement came twenty four hours after the La Roja's were eliminated from the 2007 competition by Brazil, although, the underlying incident happened after the country's final group stage match.

It was said that after their progression to the knockout stages of the competition, six players sexually assaulted two waitressses at the team's hotel, an act Ormeno strongly denied his involvement and still continues to maintain innocence till this day. Others on the other hand signed a written apology and were reinstated into the National team after serving ten out of the twenty match bans. Ex-captain Jorge Valdivia and Pablo Contreras made the Chilean 2010 World Cup team and featured prominently while Tello who also received a call up did not play.

Every team in the world has a fair share of their own disciplinary issues. The Nigerian Super Eagles are not left out of this as we have had over the years cases of players going to nightclubs during national assignments with the infamous decamping of some senior players in a Nations cup competition.
